LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Nature is helpful in dealing with anxiety

To the Editor:

Nature has always been a big part of my life. Since I was about 13 or 14 years old I’ve dealt with anxiety, and introducing myself to the outside world has been one of the greatest things I’ve done. Since moving to Jacksonville for school, I’ve even noticed that the atmosphere is much different here. It seems easier to breathe since I’m now higher up and closer to the mountains.

It’s easy to find ways to become more active outdoors, doing things like hiking, swimming, doing yard work, or just sitting outside and enjoying the weather. These things can lead to stress relief, improved immune systems, and personally, I’ve noticed that I’ve become happier spending more time outside and I’ve found new things to paint and photograph.

I’m offering a challenge to anyone who is willing to try something new. Go outside and find something you like to do that involves nature, whether it’s hiking, maybe something in the water like fishing, kayaking, swimming, or going outside to paint, read, walk, or whatever you might find interesting.
