Seitz named new athletic director

President John Beehler announced Friday Feb. 26 that Greg Seitz would takeover as JSU athletic director.

“I am extremely humbled and honored to have the opportunity to serve as the Athletic Director at Jacksonville State,” Seitz wrote in an e-mail to The Chanticleer. “I would like to thank President Beehler, the Board of Trustees and the entire Jax State family for their trust and faith in me as we continue to move the athletics department forward. It is an opportunity that I do not take for granted, and I will work hard every day to ensure that we continue to be successful, both in the classroom and on the fields and courts of competition.”

Seitz wrote that he plans to run the athletic department as he has been running it. “What’s going to drive me, I want us to be the premier team in the Ohio Valley Conference, and I want us to continue to win championships,” he wrote. “We’ve won 63 championships since joining the OVC (in 2003), and I want us to be the school that every other school in the league looks up to.”

In a JSU press release Friday, Beehler said, “We are very excited to have Greg Seitz lead our athletic department. Greg is very well respected in the OVC, the NCAA and nationally, and has proven himself while serving in the interim role. We work very well together. With his excellent contacts, he will do an outstanding job leading our athletic department into its bright future. I’m pleased to remove the interim title and introduce him as our Athletic Director.”

Under Seitz leadership as the interim athletic director, the athletic department enjoyed tremendous success. Last year, the football team managed to make an appearance in the FCS title game. They were also able to play in front of the largest crowds Burgess-Snow field has ever seen.

Aside from the record-breaking attendance, millions of fans were able to watch the Gamecocks on ESPN or on one of its sister stations, during the entire postseason.

Other sports have benefitted under Seitz’s guidance. The Capitol One Cup, an award for the nations best division I school athletic departments, saw all male athletes and female athletes rank in the top 100 out of 347  other schools.

Seitz would like to see the school ranked higher, and he has a plan he is ready to set forth.

“I’ll meet with our head coaches and our administrative staff to see what their needs are, and then evaluate each department to make sure we are being efficient and to ensure we are providing our student-athletes and coaches everything within our power to be successful,” Seitz wrote in the email.

Student athletes were also dominant in the classroom as well. Overall, the Gamecocks boasted a 3.16 cumulative GPA last fall, with 15 of 17 sports posting a 3.0 GPA or higher.
