Alan Rickman, star of Harry Potter and Die Hard dies

“Always!” is a quote largely used to refer to Snape, a Harry Potter character played by Alan Rickman. The award winning actor passed away on the January 14 after a battle with Pancreatic Cancer, his family said. He was well known not only for his portrayal of Snape but also for his performance in Die Hard and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Harry Potter author, JK Rowling, was among those who paid tribute to Rickman, describing him as “a magnificent actor and a wonderful man.” She tweeted, “There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman’s death. My thoughts are with [Rickman’s wife] and the rest of Alan’s family. We have all lost a great talent. They have lost part of their hearts.”

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe who portrays the character of Harry described him as, “One of the best actors I will ever work with.”

Rickman’s breakthrough performance in film was in 1988 when he played Hans Gruber in Die Hard.

He went on to win several awards including an Emmy and a Golden Globe, both for his performance ‘Rasputin’ back in 1996. He was also known for his theatre performances as theatre is where he began his career. He was a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company in the early 1980s.

He was nominated twice for the Tony Awards in 1986 for his Broadway performance in ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ as Vicomte de Valmont.

Here at Jacksonville State University, those familiar with Rickman had a few sentiments about the actor. Cameran Powers a “die-hard” fan of the Harry Potter series said, “Alan made it hard to hate him even when he played villains in films. Honestly, how do people even end up liking Snape? It was all Rickman’s prowess.”

Shanuki Del Mel, a freshman, posted on Facebook, “It would always be … how enticing, and at the same time deadly, his voice would be. That’s also what made him the greatest character in the Harry Potter Series. So sad.”

Rickman was 69 years old and was married to Rima Horton, who he married in 2012. They had been together since he was 19 and she was 18.
