The Jacksonville State Gamecocks defeated Tennessee Tech on Valentines night, 82-68. With the win, the Gamecocks improved to 11-17 overall and 4-9 in OVC play. The Golden Eagles dropped to 12-14 overall and 4-9 in OVC play.
Darion Rackley led all scorers for the Gamecocks with 24 points. Both Malcolm Drumwright and Jamal Hunter had 15 points each. Avery Moore had 14 while D.J. Felder rounded off with 10 points of his own. Joe Kuligoski got on the board as well with four points. Hunter collected a block while Felder had two.
Jacksonville State started off the scoring at the 19:35 mark with a basket by Hunter. The Gamecocks increased their lead to three with a free throw by Rackley. Tennessee Tech finally got on the board with 16:36 left in the half to make the score 3-2. The Gamecocks increased their lead to 9-4 before both teams exchanged baskets.
The Golden Eagles took the lead for the first time with 10:58 remaining in the first half, 10-9. Both teams swapped baskets before Tennessee Tech took a 6 point lead, 19-13. The Gamecocks cut at the lead until the 5:29 mark when Felder sank a 3-point basket to make the lead 23-21. After the Golden Eagles tied the game at 23, the Gamecocks took the lead for good. Jacksonville State went into the locker room at the half with a comfortable 36-26 lead.
The Gamecocks started the second half with a layup by Felder to increase their lead to 38-26. Both teams would continue to exchange baskets until Jacksonville State took a commanding 62-46 lead with a basket by Drumwright with 6:44 left to play. Tennessee Tech would not get any closer than 11 points.
Just like he did starting the game off with a basket, Hunter ended the night with the final points to make the final score 82-68.
The Gamecocks host Tennessee State on Feb. 21 at 5 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
