Gamecocks fall short in War Eagle Invitational

~ JSU Sportswire

The Jacksonville State volleyball team left Auburn with only one hard fought victory in the War Eagle Invitational that was held over the weekend.

After being forced into a fifth set against Alabama State last Tuesday, the Gamecocks were again put in the same predicament against first opponent Northwestern State. The Lady Demons took the early lead in the match with a win in the first set by only two.  JSU edged Northwestern State in the second set then NSU took the third set with a win. It was the Gamecocks who finished strong as they defeated the Lady Demons in the final two sets and walked away with a 3-2 match win.

NSU barely edged JSU in attack percentage with .168 to the Gamecocks’ .167 overall. The fourth set was the Gamecocks’ most prolific as they hit .268 on attack percentage. Allyson Zuhlke led the team in kills with 17, followed closely by Charis Ludtke who had 15. Five different Gamecocks had dig totals in the double digits led by Samantha Bohne who had 32. It was again Jennifer Hart who led both teams in assists with 50.

The finals for the match were 23-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-21, and 15-10 in JSU favor.

Despite a promising victory against Northwestern State, the Gamecocks would go on to lose to both Auburn and Florida A&M on the final day of the tournament.

The day’s first match against SEC opponent Auburn saw an attack percentage of -.037 for the Gamecocks, while the Tigers rode a season-best .341 on the way to their wins. The Gamecocks managed five kills from Nicole Merget and four from Zuhlke and Trisha Mockapetris. On defense, it was Bohne again who led, although this time it was only with 11 digs. Hart continued to lead the team in assists with 10 added to her name.

The finals for the second match that ended in a JSU loss were 12-25, 10-25, and 15-25.

A win in the opening set looked to set the tone for the rest of the Florida A&M match, but the Gamecocks fell behind and lost in the final three sets of the match. The first set saw the Gamecocks win after a tough opening where FAMU led 6-1. After their lone victory, the Gamecocks couldn’t grab the lead or couldn’t hold it and they dropped the remainder of the sets for the loss.

The Gamecocks’ attack percentage was better than it had been against Auburn as they hit .110 overall. Three Gamecocks had double digit digs with Hannah Kirk at 17, Bohne at 12 and Brianne Glidewell at 11. Merget led the offense with her 12 kills and Hart continued to show her dominance with assists as she had the team high with 35.

JSU loss with match finals of 25-21, 20-25, 21-25, and 14-25.

The Gamecocks will finally come home to Pete Matthews on Friday against OVC opponent SIU Edwardsville. The game is set for 7 p.m. They will then play Eastern Illinois on Saturday.
